Languages will differ enormously in the ways they realize these universals, but it seems likely that people everywhere need to express the same kinds of notion. We need to display our emotions—surprise, pleasure, sorrow, anger, iinxiety, hope, enthusiasm.
The list, of course, is not complete, but it is long enough for us to recognize the importance of mastering the means of expressing these notions and to demonstrate how little provision is made at present for teaching them.
